Valerian Kozmin Has Passed Away
On February 18, 2014, Valerian Kozmin, Head of the Department of Ethnography and Anthropology, Faculty of History, St. Petersburg State University, passed away in his 64th year after a short illness.
Kozmin's key studies were focused on ethnography of Siberian peoples. His research interests included the problems of ethnic and cultural genesis, anthropogenesis, and also methodological problems of field ethnography. The school of historical ethnography was developed thanks to his research and teaching activities at the Department of Ethnography and Anthropology. He was a gifted lecturer; many generations of students of the department remember with gratitude his lectures and seminars.
Under his leadership, several generations of students and graduate students have mastered the fundamentals of ethnography, acquired fieldwork skills, defended term papers and theses, dissertations for candidate of sciences degree. A number of his students continue successful work in leading national academic and educational institutions.
